Morning Coffee – Balance

Cafe Mocha

When I am plowing through a more challenging time, I seek my inspiration where I can find it. When a daunting task lies before me, and I feel overwhelmed, I use these words as a mantra. It’s simple but effective.

Life is like riding a bicycle.

Bet you can’t guess what I’m saying to myself today…

If you are having a tough time, just remember to keep moving. Eventually, the scenery around you will change.

Inspiring Words

The Desiderata was a poem that was also put to music. It still is one of my favorites.

English: Leonard Nimoy (Spock) at the Las Vega...

Leonard Nimoy recited it on his 1967 album “Leonard Nimoy Presents Mr. Spock’s Music from Outer Space”. In 1971, Les Crane’s version of The Desiderata peaked at #8 on the Billboard chart.

The poem was written by Max Ehrmann in 1927. He was an Indiana lawyer who lived from 1872-1945. Desiderata is a Latin word which means things to be desired.

I have intended to post it here for weeks, but didn’t. I came across my copy of it as I was sorting through the office. Must be time to share.

Desiderata

blackfridayGo placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Take kindly the counsel of years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the Universe, no less than the trees and the stars. You have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the Universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Morning Coffee – Thought for the Day

Español: Un café con leche y un cruasán.Sometimes it is the purity of a child’s perspective that can inspire us all to claim our greatness.

I have been noticing different strands of fear floating to the surface of my awareness in the past few weeks, most triggered by current life circumstances.

Recently, I came across this quote, and somehow it made me smile and inspired me at the same time:

I saw a little girl touch a big bug and shout “I conquered my fear! YES!” and calmly walk away. I was inspired. ~ Nathan Fillion

The fear doesn’t go anywhere. Like that big bug, it waits to be acknowledged. Our fear can cripple us, and often affects the way we live our lives without our even being aware of it.

The most difficult part seems to be finding the courage to reach out and touch the bug, and when we finally do, often we discover our anticipation of the bug touching was far worse than the actual experiencing of what we most feared.

I resolve to take my cue from this little girl. I resolve to touch the bug.  What bug are you afraid to touch?

Beautiful Bird(Broken Wing)

Beautiful bird,

    broken wing.

Bird can’t fly, bird can’t sing.

Cold wind blows down

harsh and strong.

Breaking bird’s wing before too long.

Beautiful bird

tries to survive.

Soon understands that to stay alive, must go.

But beautiful bird has

                                       a broken wing.

bird can’t fly, bird can’t sing.

Cold wind keeps on blowin’

harsh and strong.

Breaking bird’s Spirit before too long.

Beautiful bird,

     now empty inside,

Searches for a place to hide (from the wind).

But beautiful bird

                         has a broken wing.

Bird can’t fly, bird can’t sing.

Beautiful bird

did not despair.

Found a safe place for herself out there.

Beautiful bird,

              healing wing.

Found new strength, began to sing.

Cold wind now

can blow no more.

Beautiful bird begins to soar.

Beautiful bird,

   healing time done,

rises up now, flying into the sun.

I had to dip into the archives to keep my posting commitment today.  This is what rose to the top of the pile.  A poem.  OK, Spirit.  The poem was written in a rush of words after I had been sitting in a circle of women who had experienced abuse in some form or fashion.  Their stories brought it home to me in a very real way, on a visceral level.

I never thought this particular piece would ever see the light of day, much less the amount of light it’s going to have shone on it in just a few moments.  In honor of all those beautiful birds out there, I share this message of hope with you.

Fly, bird, fly.

How important it is to tell, in detail, the story; to claim it.

For the first time here, I am sharing something I did not write.  I do not know the source of this article.  If it is copyright and cannot be used in this way, please notify me and I shall remove it at once.  It was such a touching, inspirational story, I just wanted to share it.  We never know how much our presence can mean to another in any given moment.
