Spring Flowers

We say that flowers return every Spring, but that is a lie. It is true that the world is renewed. It is also true that that renewal comes at a price, for even if the flower grows from an ancient vine, the flowers of Spring are themselves new to the world, untried and untested.

cropped-photo127.jpgThe flower that wilted last year is gone. Petals once fallen are fallen forever. Flowers do not return in the Spring, rather they are replaced. It is in this difference between returned and replaced that the price of renewal is paid.

About a Miracle in Missouri

highway picAs I started the task of unpacking my belongings today, I had the radio turned on. A story caught my ear, and I wanted to share it with you. I got goose bumps when the announcer stated that no one was certain if it was an angel who appeared on the road the other night. I only get goose-flesh when I am in the presence of Truth. I will leave it to you to discern for yourself.

I feel it is a blessing I am in this area now, and am looking forward to what tomorrow will bring, so it was kind of interesting to have the first news story I hear be one about an angel.

On August 8, on a highway near the small town of Center, Missouri (not far from where I now live) 19-year-old Katie Lentz was fighting for her life. She was seriously injured in an accident caused by a drunk driver, and as she lay pinned, crushed between the steering wheel of her Mercedes and the driver’s seat. She was fading fast.

Workers tried for 45 minutes to free her, but didn’t have the proper equipment to do so. A helicopter waited to airlift her to the nearest trauma center, but the rescuers were unable to free her.

PriestAs if from out of nowhere, a silver-haired priest appeared. He had anointing oil with him, and he said he would pray with her. Everyone went to their knees, and the priest prayed with and for Katie. When he was finished, he told the rescuers their equipment would be sufficient to help her, and moments later the additional help arrived.

They righted the car, and extricated Katie from the mass of metal she was trapped inside of for almost an hour. When they looked for the priest to thank him for his help and comfort, they couldn’t find him. It was as if he’d vanished as suddenly as he’d appeared.

Now, remember the road was blocked off for at least a mile in both directions.

It is also interesting to note that the priest was not familiar to any of the people on scene. There are a few churches in the small towns surrounding that area, but no one recognized this priest.

Of the almost 70 photos that were taken of the accident scene, there is not a single one in which this priest appears.

Katie asked people to pray for her, and to pray out loud. Her request was answered. I believe an angel was sent to help her in her time of need. Even if it turns out the man was a human, he showed up right when she – and the other people involved – needed him to. That makes him an angel either way.

Katie’s mother has reported that she was upgraded from critical to serious condition, and that, despite two surgeries already and two more ahead, Katie is doing well.

Morning Coffee – Balance

Cafe Mocha

When I am plowing through a more challenging time, I seek my inspiration where I can find it. When a daunting task lies before me, and I feel overwhelmed, I use these words as a mantra. It’s simple but effective.

Life is like riding a bicycle.

If you are having a tough time, just remember to keep moving. Eventually, the scenery around you will change.

Inspiring Words

The Desiderata was a poem that was also put to music. It still is one of my favorites.

English: Leonard Nimoy (Spock) at the Las Vega...

Leonard Nimoy recited it on his 1967 album “Leonard Nimoy Presents Mr. Spock’s Music from Outer Space”. In 1971, Les Crane’s version of The Desiderata peaked at #8 on the Billboard chart.

The poem was written by Max Ehrmann in 1927. He was an Indiana lawyer who lived from 1872-1945. Desiderata is a Latin word which means things to be desired.

I have intended to post it here for weeks, but didn’t. I came across my copy of it as I was sorting through the office. Must be time to share.

blackfridayGo placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Take kindly the counsel of years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the Universe, no less than the trees and the stars. You have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the Universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
